HaRav
Yisrael Zeev Gustman Z'tsl was one of the outstanding figures in
the Rabbinic world in Lithuania, the U.S. and Israel of the last generation.
While studying with Rabbi Shimon Shkop at Grodno he became the son-in-law
of Rav Mayer Bessin the Rosh Yeshiva of Ramailes in Vilna and a Dayan on
the Bes Din of Rav Haim Ozer, the Rav of Vilna, all before his 20th birthday.
During the war he hid from the Nazis with the partisans in the forests
and became the Rav of the remnant of Vilna after the war. In 1949 he was
able to escape to the US where he reestablished his Yeshiva in Crown Heights.
In 1970 he moved the Yeshiva to Rehavia in Jerusalem where it continues
today.
Kuntresei Sheurim is an edited and expanded version of his weekly Sheurim (classes) which set forth a new concept in Talmud study. His analysis is topical and far ranging as his Rebbe's, Rav Shimon, but his conceptul approach to Sugias is unique - each topic is examined in its entirety following a logical sequence of its elements.
A memorial volume
is now being prepared and edited about the Rosh Yeshiva's life. We are
collecting stories, Divrei Torah, vignettes and photographs of the Rosh
Yeshiva Zts"l.
